The temperature has fallen, and the weather forecast says there is a chance of SNOW in Port Costa! I am keeping my fingers crossed. Even a few flakes would make my happiness complete!

I am working in the studio every day to finish up new things for my next two shows.

My first two open houses went really well - nothing is more fun for me than decking out my shop for Christmas, (this year with huge swags of fragrant eucalyptus), stuffing the shelves with new and enticing hand made goods, and standing behind the counter as people shop. The candles are lit, the music is on, and I get to put on my antique French shopkeepers jacket and just enjoy the excitement. I turn on the mechanical shadow dancer and everyone stops in their tracks, to watch the magic!

I decided to add one more weekend to my open house schedule - I will now be open:

Fri. and Sat. Dec 9th and 10,

Fri. and Sat. Dec. 16th and 17th.

Hours are 10 - 4 each day.

Christmas Open House

Here in Port Costa, the sidewalks are covered with little yellow leaves from the locust trees that line the streets, and the sound of the black crows echoes through the emptying trees. I know that Christmas is not far when I see and hear the sounds of November. And I am busy doing what makes me happiest of all times of the year - getting everything ready for my

Open Houses! Glue and glitter up to my elbows, and also beeswax, gold paint, paper scraps everywhere, and beautiful things piling up in the workshop, ready to be set out in rows.

Please take some time out of your hectic schedule to drive down that tree lined street and find my shop this season! I promise you a "harlinquinade" of delights!

A Return to France / Recherchez a France

I will be returning to France for another magical week at the Chateau Dumas next summer! I have decided on teaching an in - depth 3 part class involving designing, binding, writing and illustrating your own book. I would like to take our group into the sunflower fields, through the hill town of Mont Pezat, and through the market town of Cassaude, each person with pen and paper, to record for themselves the visual feast of France. I will give each student personal attention in basic drawing and writing, and also bookbinding. Kaari will guide us through all the best flea markets, lavender fields and brocantes.

Here is a picture of Monica wearing the crown she made....and also, a picture of what she found at the flea market - an old painting, fabric treasures, books, antique plates, vintage linens, and a wonderful old burnt orange suitcase to bring it all home in.

It will be a return to paradise for all of us!

Dreaming of France - Les Temps Perdu

It has been too many months since I wrote...business and busy ness get in the way and there is not always time to find the words to describe my days. But then I will look back from a distance and see the past so clearly, and the meaning of it becomes clear. Proust was the one who said it best - that the true flavor of any experience can only be felt much, much later....the remembrance of "temps perdu."

Last summer I spent a week in France, with my daughter Monica, and friends Marcia Ceppos, Kaari and Molly Meng, and Cathy Mogul. Kaari, that fearless intrepid one, organized a grand excursion for 16 women, involving an eighteenth century chateau, an antique hat factory, flea markets and brocantes, and food and wine that made us all swoon with sheer pleasure. All of this, and a huge studio room for all of us to work together to create beautiful things.

I was invited to teach several classes there, and the women in my class made wonderful hand bound books, printed on a tiny letterpress, and dipped vintage flowers in beeswax and wove them into crowns. Monica taught us to print antique style photographs called cyanotypes,

and we spent a whole day in the meadows dying antique fabrics with and ancient blue dye.

Kaari brought wonderful vintage beads and all went home with a bracelet of french charms.

All these parts, as in all fantastic voyages, added up to so much more than I can explain - six months later I am still wondering at the deeper meaning in my week at the Chateau Dumas.

I brought home with me some renewed sense about what I want and need out of life - some sense of magic - and the energy to find it, in small and large ways, in my everyday life.

THE STREETS OF ST. LOUIS

I spent about a week in my home town last month and had a wonderful time - I was flown there by Mary Engelbreit and Company to be a guest teacher at their workshop extravaganza. Everything they did was top notch - the venue was at the venerable Chase Park Plaza hotel by Forest Park, the classes were packed full of women who were very happy to be there, engrossed in learning how to make everything from glitter chandeliers (me!) to antique French jewelry (Kaari Meng)!

One of my teaching projects involved making a Victorian "moss lady" (pictured). Each table was given all the elements to create this whimsical figure, including piles of different moss species, and lots of antique trim from Tinsel Trading, and then unleashed to create from their own imagination. The variety was astounding!

I also took a couple of days off to visit my old haunt in south St. Louis, Cherokee St., which is an ancient neighborhood of old brick buildings, still filled with antique shops.

One of the shops looked just like it did 35 years ag0,
including the old hound dog sitting watch behind the counter....the ceiling was of old pressed tin, knick knacks gathered dust and the light filtered in and looked like a memory from long ago.

I left with a collection of antique file boxes, an old engraving, and a collection of old milk bottle caps!

THE BEST CAFE IN NEW YORK

For weeks I wandered the streets of Manhattan looking for a decent latte - I have been spoiled forever by Peet's coffee in San Franscisco - and I finally found the best cafe for a REAL latte, and a fantastic array of handmade French cookies. It is called MACARON, and it is on 36th street at 7th ave. It is a tiny hole in the wall with only a few seats, within a block of Macy's and the garment district. It is cozy, the people who run the place are charming, and it is a perfect place to sit back and drop out of your day for a moment and reflect on life's pleasures!

I continue to split my time and my life between my home in Port Costa and, at the opposite end of the spectrum, physically and mentally, Manhattan! The pace of business in New York leaves my head spinning and there is endless input everywhere, every moment. But I do get away from it all and just walking the streets of New York is like a smorgasbord for the creative eye. My beautiful daughter Monica came for a week and after lattes at my favorite cafe (called Macaron) we walked about 35 blocks from 35th to 70th and took pictures all along the way. Here are just a few of the gorgeous windows we saw!

Light Fairies

I had a dream several months ago. I was in some ruined and bombed out building, the windows blasted out and the doors all missing...there had been some general catastrophe that had left everything in shambles. Strangers wandered about the wreckage. I was oddly calm and collected, and stepped outside and sat down on what was left of brick steps and looked up across the street. Up high on the wall across the steet was a shimmering reflection of light coming from nowhere, a refraction that danced itself into some changable, magical shape - and this formless ephemeral beautiful thing was some kind of free gift that left me with a wordless joy in spite of the emptiness of the world I was wandering in.

In my house in Port Costa, I sometimes catch a light on the walls in the morning, reflected from the windows across the street, and they are glimmerings of the same light fairies, and for a moment I remember how I felt in the dream, perfectly happy to live in a world emptied of meaningless stuff, and left with just the dancing of the light.

Mary and I both grew up in the outskirts of St. Louis, and so I am happy to be visiting and teaching back in my original territory.

Without showing too much, here are a few pics of things I am working on for my Christmas Open House! This is just a peek around the workshop, where things are piling up in an interesting way. I am fascinated by hands this year, and they are appearing many ways, on gilded wreathes, covered with mirrors, and even sea shells. Also shown is a box full of Santos figures, waiting patiently to be dressed by me in antique clothes.
The title of my Christmas line is "Tinsel and Sawdust" and this phrase is an old way of describing the circus. I am in love with anything circus these days, and if you check my next post, I will be showing pictures of my "Cirque de Noel" line.

HAYWARD MOON

A month ago I walked down to the waterfront to watch the full moon rise, (I think it was the Harvest Moon), and then a few hours later, just before I went to bed, I walked up the hill to the little park, where there are no lights, and did a little bit more moon watching. Mr. Kitty actually followed me up there - quite far from home for a bed kitty - and also Big Boy, who roams this territory every night. They both purred and wrapped themselves around me as we all stood in the silence and moonlight.
The moon has some special meaning for me dating from my days in Hayward, Ca., a town on the edge of the east bay, full of used car lots and run down strip malls. My life then seemed so prosaic and I felt so lost to the mysteries inside of me. When I finally began to re-connect to them, I was in a very scary place, and was not sure how or where to start, but I knew I needed a place to go of my own, and so I sort of moved into to the old ramshackle 1920's garage in the back yard. I started spending all my time there, playing with drawings, writing, etc.
And when I came outside after an evening there, it would be late, and I would see the moon rising over the back yard (which by day was ugly - with piles of rusty old metal, old plastic toys, broken bicycles and an old volkswagon) and the moon would just transform everything- and breathe life into all of my intuitive suspicions.
So now I go out and see the moon several times a month, and I am always looking for it in the sky, to see if it is waxing or waning. Sometimes I can be out shopping, and see the full moon rise of Kmart, and it seems even more amazing that it does in beautiful Port Costa, where I now live, and I call that a Hayward Moon, because the drama and magic of it transforms our everyday life.

THE REASON FOR CATS

The reason CATS are here....is to remind us to slow down!
I have posted pictures of Big Boy, who is my studio cat, and here is Mr. Kitty, who owns my bed. He will occasionally move over and let me sleep there too, but there are mornings when I wake up and find my head flat on the bed, and Mr. Kitty, curled up right in the middle of my pillow.

October is almost here...and I am in the busiest time of the year. I spent all weekend re-doing the shop for my Halloween Show. Nothing could be more fun! I got a bolt of cheap black tulle at the flea market last April, and now I know why! So that I could drape it all over everything in my shop for Halloween! It gives a spooky beautiful shadow to everything. I love Halloween because it has an edge to it, and you can play with the dark and light of it. Besides, orange is my favorite color!
But I have been also working hard on books, and am sending out 35 books tomorrow - this means I will have finished and delivered almost 140 books! I am planning on finishing up and sending out all books through #200 by Oct. 30.

Gift Shows!

August just flew by - I spent most of it doing trade shows (see picture of the booth as Marcia, Monica and I were setting up for the SF gift show), so I lost a whole month in the workshop. Now I am back to working on books (as well as getting ready for my Fall Open Houses). I thank my book buyers again for their patience - you are, each and every one of you, an angel. My goal is to have every book finished and delivered by the end of November!

And, I have signed up to teach several classes at a symposium of artists and designers this coming April. I am very excited - there will be many high powered artists there and a very high energy atmosphere! It is put on by Mary Engelbreit of Home Companion magazine, and will be in St. Louis. Summer at the Theatre of Dreams

This is one of my favorite times of the year. The day after Midsummer's Night, I am already feeling perkier because I know that the rest of the year is in a long process of becoming...Christmas! My heart is a little happier, my mood is one of anticipation. I actually bring out the Christmas music in August! So while I am laying in my hammock, where I rest on quiet afternoons, and a single little dry leaf accidentally drops down on me, I am imagine that Fall has already started, and begin dreaming of winter. I am full of plans and ideas for my next Port Costa Open Houses, and here are the dates:

Why is there CAT HAIR...

In all of my books?!!! In case you have received a book and wondered.. where does the cat hair come from.....? here is one of the reasons! His given name is Seigfried, but he usually gets called "Big Boy" for obvious reasons. Should you find an inky Paw Print on a page of your book, it is NOT mine! I am working every week on finishing up my book orders, but also doing design work for several brand new lines that will be coming out this fall. I will post pictures of some of those items next month.

Lead time is probably 6 weeks to catch up with orders, as I am assembling and hand binding about 20 books a week. WHAT IS TINSEL?

Tinsel is a glimmer of the past, winking at us through the shadows...it is the soft warm silver of antique Christmas garland...it is the smell of tarnished gold fringe on an old dress in an attic, and the beaded arabesque on that Victorian hat. Like some fantastical currency from an imaginary world, tinsel has a measureless value for it's shimmering beauty.
Every once in a while, we are lucky enough to find a few scraps at the flea market, and each little treasure is usually "too good to use". So try to imagine a huge forgotten warehouse of antique tinsel, all socked away in crumbling boxes from the nineteen tens and twenties, so much treasure it is spilling into the aisle ways between stacks up so high... This is TINSEL TRADING!!! This is a real store, not wishful thinking, and it is at #1 West 37th St., in NYC.
Tinsel Trading is run by my friend Marcia Ceppos, who inherited it from her Grandfather. On the few times that I can be coaxed onto an airplane, I am usually on my way to see Marcia, her in-store designer, Rosemary Warren, and her fabulous BASEMENT!! I should mention that the basement is generally off-limits, but just take a look around the upstairs shop and it will take your breath away.
When I get home, I unpack my treasures. Yards of trim to make ornaments, fringe to add to a paper elephant, little beads that would take the best earrings, and piles of antique brass boullion, which I pull and stretch out around my snowballs.
I feel so lucky to know Marcia and Rosemary, and the most fabulous store in the world!

LA BELLE MYSTERE

"The Beautiful Mystery" is the theme of my Chistmas Show. THE SEASON OF MAGIC

HAS ARRIVED!!! When I walk out to feed the cats in the morning, I can see my breath, and the patio is papered with little yellow leaves. The look and feel of the outside permeates my work at this time of year. Gilded oak leaves, and glittered acorns, and mirrored things that reflect like the pools of silvery rain. I am busy in the workshop making special things for my upcoming Christmas shows. First, on Fri. & Sat. Nov.14 & 15, I will be in New York, at my favorite store, Tinsel Trading! (212 730-1030) I will bring a trunk load of magic with me, including many of the items pictured. Two weeks later, I will be having my own Christmas Open House at my shop in Port Costa, on Fri, Sat, and Sun, Nov. 28, 20, & 30. (The weekend after Thanksgiving). THE WALL OF QUOTES

When my daughter was 14, she got a magic marker and started to scrawl her favorite quotes all over the walls of her room. Some were from Shakespeare, some were from cartoons, some were from movies. Now my room has a wall of quotes also, written in chalk on old slate blackboards mounted to the wall. I can change them every week. Today, they read: "I sell the shadow to support the substance", "They can't make me and they can't break me", and "Self discipline is not about denial, it is about purpose". The first quote is by Sojourner Truth, the next two are by me.
But I have a new favorite quote and it is this:
"To live in so much mystery, to rely on a feeling, an instinct, on faith, that everything I need is already inside me, and best I just don't block the exit."
That remarkable quote is by Michelle Williams, actress.

A MORE PERSONAL VIEW

I am still getting the hang of creating posts - getting the pictures to post with the relevant text is a puzzle. Here are a couple of views of my tiny apartment home, which is right behind my shop. I am so lucky to live and work here. I came here 11 years ago and I knew right away this was where I wanted to be. Lord knows I get so frantically busy juggling everything in my life that I sometimes just rush through my days.

But then I usually step out every morning to sniff the air when I feed the cats, or hear the air rushing through the trees in the late afternoon - moments when you stop, and are just there in the present.

from the Theatre of Dreams. My October Open House was last weekend - Once again I was amazed that people came from near and far to drive down that windy country road to visit my shop. I work alone for months at a time getting ready for my Open Houses, and when I finally see the shop all lit up and crowded with people, it makes it all worth it! I am much cheered by the turnout and by all of the smiling faces and kind words. Here are some views of the shop that I took right before I opened the doors.

My friend Marcia, from Tinsel Trading, keeps telling me to get more personal in my blogs!! So I will tell you a little bit more. Right now I am sitting in my bed drinking coffee! It is 8:00 am, the backdoor is open and there are crows cawing outside. (I live right behind my shop, in a tiny apartment with a private patio) There are cats draped all over my bed. I lit candles because in Oct. it is foggy in the early mornings here. My bed is right up against a big window that looks out over a private outdoor space that is draped with virginia creeper and birch trees. (see pictures in the next post). This is the best hour of the day for me, when I sit and drink my coffee and look outside as the world wakes up.

OCTOBER IS ALMOST HERE

and I am still working on the book! It is beginning to seem like the endless project, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!! When I get tired of turning the heavy wheel of that letterpress, I call on my friend and worker bee Rob Garbarino to take over. He has arms like an octopus and makes that machine hum. The letterpressed text is now done, and neatly stacked up, waiting for...

The drawings in the book, which will be offset printed. And while they are at A to Z printing, I have three weeks to put together some merchandise for my Halloween show - Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3 & 4, from 10 - 4. (see pics). Nothing could be more fun! I will try to post more often, at least once a week, from now on. I am still getting the hang of it.

I finally have more pictures of the book, but first, a photo of my antique letterpress, which I am using to do much of the custom printing involved. This press is over 100 years old and I have many fonts of antique lead and hand carved wood type in the type case next to it.

The next pic is some neat stuff on my table top that I am using in the book. There will be lots of vintage paper and materials used in the printing and binding of the book.
The next pictures are of different pages in the book, and I hope to show that there will be many inclusions, such as a ticket to the Theatre of Dreams, and an Opening NIght poster! At the end of the book, there is a beautiful surprise, but I cannot show it yet! There will be a limited edition of 350 copies, and I have pre-sold 98. I do not expect them to last through the fall. I am trying to get more good pictures of the book, including some of the newer pages. I will try to post them in the next few days! I will be getting the printing going next week and hope to finish up my limited edition by the middle of July!!

"Notebook for an Imaginary Life"- That is the sub-title for my book. For the past twelve years I have been drawing in my Theatre of Dreams notebooks, keeping track of ideas before they evaporate, making notes for future projects and drawing things I love. I also wrote a poem years ago about the making of an imaginary life, and the poem and the illustrations have come together to make a book!

I am piecing it together carefully and will complete a limited artist's edition of 350 copies. This book will be hand assembled and hand bound here at my studio in Port Costa, and will include collage, letterpress and a unique drawing on the flyleaf of each copy. Your copy will be signed, numbered and inscribed to you.

The book price is $250 and estimated date of completion is now late July. See attached pictures for a preview of a few of the pages!

Good News! My glitter letters are back in production!

Both large display alphabet and small 6" letters are now available from Tinsel Trading in New York. Their phone number is:(212) 730-1030.

I personally flew out with my patterns and materials to train the worker bees. All letters are made exactly to my specifications using the same vintage style silver glass glitter that I use here in Port Costa. The price is comparable to what Midwest of Cannon Falls was charging, but these letters are made in the USA!
